ASK NICK: How the wrong money in winter ruins your summer

The Question

"Nick, my income plummets every summer between June and September because clients cancel to travel or go to the beach. Is this summer slump just an unavoidable reality of running a fitness business in Malta?"

The Answer

Yes, the seasonal fluctuation is real. Whether you’re in Malta or the UK, the fitness industry has natural peaks and troughs. Summer is quiet everywhere because people live their lives. It's no different from the boat companies or restaurants in St. Paul's Bay.

But here is the hard truth most PTs don’t want to hear: The reason you are sweating your rent in July isn’t a summer problem. It’s a January problem.

When the January New Year hype hits, struggling trainers operate out of pure desperation. They adopt a 'grab everything' mentality and take on anyone flashing cash.

The problem? January attracts the highest concentration of flaky clients. They are riding a temporary wave of guilt that wears off in four weeks. They cancel last minute, scramble your day, cause administrative headaches, and are generally a pain in the arse.

Worse yet, by March—when the serious, high quality clients actually come looking for a trainer—your calendar is completely clogged up by the lingering January crowd sluggishly dragging out their remaining sessions.

By June, the flakes vanish entirely. Because you didn't leave room to onboard committed, long term lifestyle clients in March, your income completely craters. You took the "wrong money" in winter, and it cost you your summer.

If you want to survive the summer slump next year, you have to stop running your business month to month. You need to build a proper client filtering process, change your business model from transactional blocks to committed retainers, and learn to say 'no' to the wrong money.

If you treat your business like a seasonal gamble, it will always reward you with instability.

You don't need more clients this summer, you need a better strategy for the next 12 months.

I help fitness professionals fix their client filtering, clean up their annual calendar architecture and build sustainable models so summer becomes a time to relax, not panic.
